Course Requirements

The following is a brief description of the course assignments that satisfy the course objectives.  Scholars should refer to the electronic textbook for the specific assignment objectives, assignment discussion, and examples, before beginning any assignment.

PI Scholar's Confidential Personal Information and Memo of Intent
Candidates provide contact and work information by sending an e-mail to the instructor with the information requested in the first assignment of the e-text.  This will remain confidential to the instructor only except for the scholar's e-mail address which will be provided to all candidates for the purpose of on-line presentations.

Candidates will write a memo to the instructor following standard memo format provided in the e-text.  The memo will state the scholar's current registration status, identify registration problems if any, state the option selected for completing EVOC 519, identify the grade the scholar hopes to earn in EVOC 519 with a plan for how that grade will be achieved.  Candidates will describe any special needs anticipated during the quarter with a suggested solution for meeting those needs.  Candidates will describe the software and hardware candidates will use for completion of 519 coursework.  The memo will be submitted as an e-mail attachment.

CA1 Lesson Plan
Candidates will develop a lesson plan for a course they teach or plan to teach that includes interactive strategies for beginning, intermediate, and advanced English Learners.  Candidates will reference their 501 coursework and Part 3 of Teaching English Language Learners in Career and Technical Education Programs by Victor M. Hernandez-Gantes and William Blank to ensure appropriate English learner strategies are addressed.  The lesson plan will follow the standard lesson plan template including assessment strategies to measure English learner progress and plan that provides time for correction and practice to achieve mastery of English and subject matter content.

WR1 Computer Software
Candidates will locate and describe three specific software programs that provide educational support for a class candidates teach or would like to teach in the future.  Include at least one (1) software program appropriate for English learners.  Reports should include system requirements necessary to support the programs and a description of how these programs would benefit the instructor and/or the students in a specific vocation.

CA2 Digital Photography and Graphic Illustrations
Candidates will use a digital camera to take a self portrait photograph. Candidates will crop and reduce the size of the photo then save it as a jpg file suitable for electronic transfer and publication.  Candidates will locate a "free" graphic from the Web to download or capture for use in a document and save it as a file.  Candidates will select and insert a graphic from the library of the software used for the assignment.  Candidates will be introduced to various graphic capabilities of word processing programs.  Candidates will use these graphic skills to develop a handout for the lesson plan that includes strategies appropriate for English learners.  The report will follow standard memo format and be submitted via e-mail attachment.

WR2 Compare and Contrast Two Computer Systems
Candidates will research then write a report in standard memo format to compare and contrast a Personal Computer (PC) laptop which runs in the Windows environment with a Macintosh (Mac) laptop which runs in the Mac operating system (OS) environment.  Laptops will be evaluated based the ability to support and run the software selected in WR1 as well as features.  Reports should include hardware specifications, price, and capabilities.  Reports will be submitted via e-mail attachment.

CA3 Slide Show
Skills acquired in the previous competency assignments will be applied to develop a Power Point presentation for the lesson plan generated in CA1.  The slide show will integrate interactive strategies for English learners.   The application of animation, transitions, sound effects and ungrouping clip art will be introduced.  More advanced capabilities may be addressed respective to the computer literacy of the class-at-large.  Slide shows and lesson plans will be e-mailed to the instructor as attachments with a memo describing how English learner strategies will implemented.

WR3 Web Resources
Candidates will use a search engine to locate 10 Web sites specific to a course candidates teach.  At least five (5) Web sites must address English learner strategies or reusable learning objects (RLOs) for English learners.  The URL (Web address) for these Web sites will be e-mailed to the instructor in a memo describing each Web site and explaining how the information on that site can be used by students or incorporated into activities and assignments that address English learners in their course.  The annotate list will be submitted in memo format as an attachment.

CA4 Web Site
Candidates will develop and publish an academic Web site for a course candidates currently teach or would like to teach in the future. The Web site will integrate English learner strategies.  Candidates may opt for an electronic presentation of their EVOC 519 assignments in lieu of a Web page for a class candidates teach.  Web page development will focus on basic principles of good design and practical application in education.  Novice computer users are encouraged to use TeacherWeb for this assignment.  Specific instructions and examples are located in the e-text.

WR4 Technology Development Plan
Candidates will write a memo which provides an assessment of their computer literacy at the initial of EVOC 519, their current ability at the end of the course and describing a plan for improving those skills in the future.  The plan must be detailed clearly outlining the specific skills, method of pursuit, and timeframe for acquisition.  It will be presented in memo format as an e-mail attachment.  Candidates may receive credit for attending a technology conference in lieu of this report.

FP Final Presentation
Candidates will generate an electronic presentation for peer-review.  The final will include an introduction, objectives, and expected outcomes for English learners report, lesson plan, Power Point, and handout.  I may published on their Web site or provided as e-mail attachments to the instructor and class-at-large.  Candidates are encouraged to use this final as part of their EVOC 501 or EVOC 518 coursework by taping their lesson and either publishing on their Web sites or You Tube and providing the URL to the class  instructor of record.

I do NOT give incompletes.  An incomplete is at the instructor's discretion.  If you are unable to complete the work you should drop the course and complete all necessary paper work by the census date.  No drops will be processes after the census date.  You must either complete the work in a timely manner or you will fail the course.  If you fail, you can re-enroll in a subsequent quarter and challenge the "F" to receive your most recent grade.
